FGCU basketball full schedule announced; Florida officially on the schedule

College basketball season is rapidly approaching, and that means that schedules are being finalized for programs around the country.

The FGCU men’s basketball team announced its full schedule on Wednesday, rounding out the last three officially unconfirmed games with a pair of non-Division I opponents, and a game that was well known but not officially announced, that the Eagles will play against the Florida Gators at a neutral site game in Sunrise in December.

As previously reported in July, FGCU and Florida will play on Dec. 22 in the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic at Sunrise’s BB&T Center. The game will be nationally televised on Fox Sports 2, and statewide on Fox Sports Sun.

“Playing on a neutral court in Sunrise will be a great opportunity for Zach Scott and Haanif Cheatham’s families to see them play close to home and allow for all of the programs in South Florida that have been great supporters of FGCU basketball to see us play in person,” FGCU coach Michael Fly said. “It is our hope that playing such a challenging schedule will prepare our team for peak performance during conference play.”

The two other games announced Wednesday are against a pair of NAIA opponents, Southeastern and Keiser. Southeastern will function as FGCU’s home opener on Nov. 8.

The Eagles open the 2018-19 season on the road playing Illinois State on Nov. 6, the back half of a home-and-home series. FGCU won last year’s game 98-87 in Alico Arena.

Among the highlight games on the schedule are a road date with Michigan State on Nov. 11. In 2016, FGCU traveled to East Lansing, Mich. and gave the Spartans all they could handle, with a controversial clock issue ending the game before the Eagles could get off a last-second shot, losing 78-77.

FGCU will also travel to Ole Miss on Dec. 29, and to UMBC, last year’s NCAA Tournament darlings who became the first No. 16 seed to win over a No. 1 seed on Dec. 16 in what’s begin dubbed the “Cinderella Showdown.” UMBC will return the favor in 2019.

The schedule also feature three games not quite at home but about as close as possible, as the Eagles play in the Gulf Coast Showcase at the newly-renamed Hertz Arena on Nov. 19-21. They’ll play Toledo in their opening game, other matchups will depend on how the games play out.
