Man gets life for murder of infant he was babysitting

Lee Herald Favicon 16A Fort Myers man has received a life sentence for second degree murder and child abuse committed while he was babysitting an infant and two other children in November of 2016.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, 29-year old Rafael Antonio Carrion Jr. faces life in prison after being convicted of aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, and second degree murder after a four day trial in Lee County.

In November of 2016, Carrion was babysitting an eight-month old and two other siblings for a week at his own home in Fort Myers. The defendant called 911 on Thanksgiving Day because the infant was unresponsive. The baby was transported to a hospital where he later died from blunt force trauma to the dead which fractured the child’s skull. The babysitter gave a number of different stories to investigators, but denied harming the child.

Carrion is currently in custody at the Lee County Jail.
