Ave Maria woman killed in collision with dump truck

Lee Herald Favicon 16An Ave Maria woman has died after colliding with a dump truck on Tuesday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 54-year old Sonia Matilde Velasquez was travelling east in her 2015 Hyundai Genesis on Pope John Paul II Blvd in Ave Maria at 7:32 Tuesday morning. The Genesis was approaching the intersection with Camp Keais Road, facing a stop sign.

At the same time, a dump truck was traveling south on Camp Keais Road. The FHP report states that Velasquez failed to stop at the stop sign while making a left turn and entered into the path of much larger vehicle. The dump truck collided with the left driver side of the sedan, fatal injuring Velasquez.

The report says that alcohol was not a factor for either driver in the crash.
