As of 2:30 p.m., the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 are open. Northbound lanes remain closed between Bayshore Road(Exit 143) and Tuckers Grade(Exit 158).
Those traveling to or from Southwest Florida along Interstate 75 will need to find an alternate route as a possible hazmat situation has shut a 15-mile stretch of highway in northern Lee and southern Charlotte Counties on Monday morning.
The incident is reportedly related to a commercial vehicle stopped at northbound on I-75 around mile marker 153. Drivers heading southbound on I-75 are being diverted at Tuckers Grade (Exit 158), and drivers heading northbound are being diverted at Bayshore Road (Exit 143).
Hazmat crews and fire departments are joining FHP personnel at the scene. No indication has been given to the nature of the possible contaminate or the length of time it would require to make the area passable again.
Those traveling through the area should consider U.S 41, or State Road 31 (Babcock Ranch Road) as alternate routes.
This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
