FHP: Drunk driver backed into picnic tables, injuring eight

Lee Herald Favicon 16Over the weekend, a drunk driver backed into a cluster of picnic tables, injuring eight before fleeing the scene and being arrested a half a mile away according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The report from the FHP states that Antonio Rosas, 51, of Naples was backing up his Honda Accord in the parking lot of Mi Mercado Foods located at 11375 Tamiami Trail East on Saturday morning.

The car allegedly smashed through a number of picnic tables where people were eating, injuring eight pedestrians. Rosas then fled the scene, according to the FHP, but was found about a half a mile from the store. The report notes that the crash was alcohol related.

Seven of the pedestrians were transported to Naples Community Hospital for the treatment of minor injuries:

Luis Varillas, 45, of Bonita Springs
Claudia Roque, 39, of Bonita Springs
Bibiana Varillas, 17, of Bonita Springs
Saul Varillas, 9, of Bonita Springs
Obdulia Pimentel, 32, of Naples
James Vargas, 18, of Marco Island
George Silva, 29, of Naples

Betsy Soto, 18, of Naples was also transported to NCH with serious injuries.

Rosas has been arrested on nine DUI-related charges and nine hit-and-run-related charges.
