Officers detained and disarmed a man who was allegedly attempting rob a Circle K convenience store in Fort Myers on Wednesday morning.
According to the Fort Myers Police Department, officers were flagged down by a customer leaving the Circle K at 3614 Cleveland Avenue who claimed that a black male had just pointed a gun at the clerk inside the store.
Officers said that they attempted to make contact with Derrick Lemarr Edwards, Jr., 20, but he ignored commands to stop and began to retreat. After detaining Edwards, reports say that officers searched the man and found a firearm in his pants pocket. Detectives said that both the witness and the store clerk gave statements claiming that the suspect pulled the gun and demanded cash.
Edwards is now in custody at the Lee County Jail and faces a number of charges including robbery with a firearm, possession and carrying a concealed firearm that had an altered serial number, and resisting arrest. His first court appearance is scheduled for August 13.
