The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the daylight murder of rapper XXXTentacion, while the Cape Coral Police Department is working to dispel rumors that the suspect is connected to an address in Lee County.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, 22-year old Dedrick Devonshay Williams was arrested just before 7 p.m. Wednesday evening in connection with the murder of Jahseh Onfroy, the rapper also known as XXXTentacion.
Onfroy was reportedly shot while leaving the parking lot of a shop in Deerfield Beach on Monday.
The Cape Coral Police Department has been working to dispel an internet rumor that a suspect in the XXTentacion murder may be connected to an address in that city.
In a release on Wednesday, the CCSO said that an address had been widely circulated on social media after the death of Onfroy. Despite police contacting the residents of that address and determining that they have no connection to any suspects in the case, a large number of violent threats have been leveled at the incorrect address by proxy. Both the CCSO and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office have additional personnel in the neighborhood of the address as a precautionary measure. One arrest has already been made due to the increased law enforcement presence.
“One arrest in close proximity to the inaccurate address has already been made on the charge of loitering and prowling,” said the CCSO in its Wednesday release. “Law enforcement will be conducting extra patrols in the area until the situation is resolved.”
