FSW basketball wins first NJCAA tournament game in program history

Lee Herald Favicon 16Florida Southwestern’s men’s basketball team played in its first national postseason game on Wednesday.

It will play in its second on Thursday.

Tyler Cheese had a double-double, and four FSW players scored in double figures for the No. 6 seed Bucs, as they handled No. 11 Hutchinson at the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Hutchinson, Kan., 80-65.

The Bucs(30-2) took the lead for the first time on a three from Maddox Daniels just under four minutes into the game, and never looked back using a 15-4 run to stretch it out to 19-10 on a Tremell Murphy layup. After that, Hutchinson(29-7) never got closer than four. FSW led by as many as 23 in the second half.

Cheese had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Tra’Von Faga led the Bucs with 18 points. Murphy and ShanQuan Hemphill added 13 points each for the Bucs, who shot 53 percent from the floor – getting 54 of their 80 in the paint.

Entering as the No. 6 seed in the 24-team single elimination tournament earned the Bucs a first round bye, so Wednesday’s win put the second-year program into the quarterfinals, where they’ll face No. 3 Vincennes. Vincennes(33-1) beat No. 14 Motlow State 86-82 in their second round game. The winner will play the winner of No. 2 Northwest Florida and No. 10 Southern Idaho in the semifinal on Friday.

No. 6 FSW vs. No. 3 Vincennes, Thursday, 9 p.m.
