Bonita Beach Causeway back open after deputy activity caused shutdown

Lee Herald Favicon 16UPDATE 6:40 p.m. The Causeway is back open.

According to an LCSO spokesperson, the causeway was closed due to deputies responding to a call for a suspicious person. The area has since been cleared and no arrests were made.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is advising drivers stay away from the Bonita Beach Causeway Friday evening, as both directions of the road are closed.

The shutdown began around 5:30 p.m. Friday and is near Lover’s Key, one of two ways on or off of Fort Myers Beach. In an email Friday evening, an LCSO spokesperson said it was due to “deputy presence” in the area.

No other details, including the reason for the deputy presence, or how long the shutdown will last were immediately available.

Motorists are being advised to take alternate routes. For getting on or off of Fort Myers Beach, use San Carlos Boulevard and the Matanzas Pass Bridge.
