Five FGCU players scored in double-figures, and the Eagles hit 17 threes en route to the women’s basketball team’s 89-43 rout of NJIT on Monday.
The Eagles(24-4, 10-1 ASUN) faced little realistic threat from the last-place Highlanders(3-23, 1-10), leading 48-24 at the half and by as many as 49 in the fourth quarter.
Jessica Cattani led the Eagles with 18 points off 6-of-8 shooting from the three-point line. Tytionia Adderly recorded her second straight double-double, with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Rosemarie Julien scored 17 points, China Dow added 15, and reserve Chandler Ryan scored 10 off the bench in the second half.
Thanks in part to 20 offensive rebounds, and 24 NJIT turnovers, the Eagles nearly took as many shots from the three-point line(44) as the Highlanders did in total(45). NJIT shot 29 percent from the floor.
With three games left in the regular season, FGCU holds a one-game lead over second place Jacksonville(19-7, 9-2). The Eagles also hold the tie-breaker by virtue of sweeping the Dolphins this season.
FGCU returns home to play Lipscomb on Saturday and could clinch the conference and the top seed in next month’s ASUN tournament with a win and a Jacksonville loss to USC-Upstate. The Eagles also clinch with wins against Lipscomb and Kennesaw State on Monday.
