Dow’s double-double leads to Eagles rout of Upstate

Lee Herald Favicon 16China Dow had a double-double, and the FGCU women’s basketball team wasted no time in putting away USC-Upstate on Monday, 93-60 at Alico Arena.

After Saturday’s game against NJIT where coach Karl Smesko was less than thrilled about his team’s defense – the Eagles allowed 50 percent shooting to one of the least efficient offenses in the nation – the Eagles stormed out of gate on Monday. The Eagles forced Upstate into seven first period turnovers and held the Spartans to just 30 percent shooting in the first half.

“Upstate is hard to guard and if you don’t use the right technique they’re going to get open shots,” Smesko said. “There were a lot of pretty good performances. A lot of people contributed to the win.

Meanwhile, the offense was clicking, hitting on 11-of-15 shots from the floor, including three three-pointers, as the Eagles rolled out to a 28-12 lead after the game’s first 10 minutes. Dow, who checked in just before the midpoint of the first, was responsible for 11 of those points, including a three on her first shot of the night.

“I felt pretty good. My teammates got it going, I think that’s what started us from the first quarter,” Dow said. “We were just going hard and things were open, and open for a lot of people. Everyone was contributing and having fun.”

It was never really much of a game for the Eagles(17-3, 3-0 ASUN) after that. Dow finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, one of five Eagles in double figures. Erica Nelson and Nasrin Ulel scored 14 points each, Rosemarie Julien had 11 points, and Lisa Zderadicka added 10 more off the bench.

FGCU led by as many as 37 in the fourth, and never trailed.

DeNisha Swain led Upstate(6-12, 1-2) with 13 points.

The Eagles now begin a road trip for the first time this season in conference play, a two game swing that includes Kennesaw State(4-10, 0-3) on Saturday, and Lipscomb(6-12, 2-1) on Monday.
