The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has taken custody of 51 year-old Jessie Hayes, Jr. after he was connected to a sexual assault and kidnapping case.
According to reports, on August 3, 1993, the LCSO received a call about a kidnapping and sexual battery that occurred on a dirt roadway behind the Greater Bethel Baptist Church on Fairview Avenue in Fort Myers.
Deputies say that Hayes approached the victim’s vehicle at the intersection of Highland and Edison Avenues and, after forcing his way into her car, placed a knife to her abdomen and told her to drive to the location where the assault took place. The victim said Hayes left her alone in the vehicle after sexually attacking her. Forensic evidence was collected during a medical examination of the victim.
A search of the CODIS database from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which stores DNA information, resulted in a match with Hayes, who has been serving a 30 year sentence at the Union Correctional Institution in north Florida for an attempted armed robbery.
Hayes has been transported to the Lee County Jail.
