The 1999 Toyota Camry sped down Butte Street, on Friday evening, headed in an easterly direction towards Champion Avenue.
Failing to stop at the stop sign posted at the Champion Avenue intersection, the driver made an abrupt right turn and subsequently lost control of the vehicle.
Upon leaving the roadway and traveling into a residential driveway, an attempt to correct the Camry’s path led to the vehicle’s rotation and overturning.
The Toyota rolled, several times, over a canal embankment, and came to rest upside down in a canal adjacent to Champion Avenue.
The vehicle contained two occupants: a 13-year-old driver and his two-year-old passenger.
The young driver was able to exit the overturned vehicle and remove his toddler passenger.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 13-year-old driver was given permission to drive the vehicle around the neighborhood. As a result, Martin Martinez, Jr. (DOB 04-25-1985) was arrested and charged with child neglect.
Martinez has a number of prior arrests in Lee County including, but not limited to, Cocaine Sales and Possession, Possession of Prescription Drugs, Battery and Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement.
Martinez is currently on Felony Probation for drug charges, to which he pled guilty, and this arrest will violate the conditions of that probation.
